RE: SPRING EDUCATION – MAY 6, 7 & 8, 2011 – BURNABY

The Spring education for the Pacific Region will be held at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown, 6083 McKay Avenue, Bumaby, B. C. V5H 2W7 (phone: 604-438-1200). The courses will run May 6, 7 and 8, 2011. The courses being offered will be:


BASIC SHOP STEWARD
This course is for members wanting to become a shop steward, or just to have a better understanding of the rights and duties of a shop steward. You will also learn how to protect our sisters and brothers on the work floor.

BASIC HEALTH & SAFETY FOR WORKPLACE REPRESENTATIVES
This course is for members in offices of less than 20 employees that has a representative not a Local Joint Health &Safety Committee.

CUPW health and safety representatives will explore the different interests of the employer and the union in health and safety. Participants will practice “facing management” and discuss ways to mobilize members around health and safety issues. At the same time, they will develop the skills and knowledge they need to feel confident in their role as a health & safety representative.

HARASSMENT – VIOLENCE AWARENESS COURSE
This course is intended to raise awareness about what is workplace harassment and violence. What are the responsibilities of the employer the union and the individual. How we can work to prevent harassment/violence. What avenues of redress are available to our members if they are being harassed. This course will also help to develop assertiveness skills to better deal with harassment/violence.

RSMC COLLECTIVE AGREEMENT COURSE
This course is intended for RSMCs, as well as Local Executive Committee members who deal with RSMC issues. At the end of the course, participants should understand the basic rights of RSMCs under their collective agreement. Priority will be given to RSMC members.

The deadline for applications is April 4, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. All applications must go through your Local and Registration form must be signed by an executive member.

Locals are responsible for lost wages.
