Depot 74/99 POST RESTRUCTURE UPDATE!

On July 15, 2013, Canada Post imposed a flawed and contentious restructure on the postal workers stationed at Depot 74/99. Urban Services, the department responsible for all restructuring exercises, decimated routes and deleted positions resulting in widespread service failures, over-burdening, and overtime.

The Facts:

  • 24 Full time positions deleted
  • 10 Part time positions deleted
  • 32 relay boxes removed
  • Virtually all former directs converted to regular delivery
  • Introduction of flip cases
  • Removal of the secondary “M” runs
  • The complete and blatant failure to recognize and build previously identified PPD positions.

In addition to the above-mentioned problems, the employer compounded the already fragile state of Depot 74/99 by constructing incoherent and illegible case strips, failing to provide the proper equipment to prepare admail, and incorrectly placing (or misplacing) relay boxes all over the downtown corridor.

Where We Stand Now:

After experiencing a disastrous first two (2) weeks wherein service commitments to our customers were recklessly and knowingly disrupted, resulting in severe overburdening, the employer, rather than take accountability for this calamity has elected to blame the workers and their inability to adapt to “change”.   After ten (10) days of protest and copious amounts of overtime, the employer has finally agreed to meet today (July 29, 2013) with the local officers and representatives from the 74/99 work floor to consult on how we can fix this catastrophe.  With your help, we will hold this Corporation accountable for their erroneous mistakes and ensure the workers are respected and protected under the provisions set forth within the Collective Agreement.

Moreover, we will demand that the Corporation maintain their service commitments in a manner consistent with the Canadian Postal Charter without imposing further impositions to the workers.

The Vancouver Local officers, coupled with the Executive, are aware of the plight being experienced by the workers of 74/99.  We empathize with your frustrations and we pledge to continue to work tirelessly to obtain favourable results.  We ask that you remain strong, defiant, and diligent.  We must stand together as one.  If we remain true to these imperatives, we will be successful.
