Depot 74/99 RESTRUCTURE CONSULTATION UPDATE!

On Tuesday, July 30th 2013, members from the Depot 74/99 work floor and representatives from the Union met with the employer to discuss ways to resolve the issues arising from the restructure.

Our primary goals:

  • To restore service to our customers;
  • To reduce the overburdening being experienced by the workers;
  • Fix all known discrepancies and case strip problems;
  • Adding of relay boxes and lobby drops where required;
  • Restoring Points of Calls back to “Direct” where required;
  • Identifying external inventory issues for correction; and
  • Setting an acceptable timeline to correct these discrepancies

In response to the Union’s complaints regarding the shortage of relay boxes, Canada Post advised that it will expedite the allocation of additional relay boxes on request before undertaking the process of weighing bags. Usually, relay boxes are allocated after being justified through the weighing process. Please inform your supervisor in writing, without delay, where you feel that additional relay boxes are required.

We were successful in convincing the Corporation to maintain the “the status quo” regarding the collation of flyers. In other words, in consideration of the business customers who would be forced to wait for their mail deliveries if collation were to be strictly performed at noon (or on the following morning), collation may be performed during work hours at the depot following the completion of p.m. deliveries.

Additionally, the employer has agreed, where required, to provide additional elevator and travel time for buildings that receive more than thirty-five (35) lbs of mail and flyers, require multiple trips to the relay boxes, and/or receive above-average amounts of personal contact items. Please identify in writing, any locations where you feel additional elevator and travel time would be justified – so that we can follow up.

The Employer has admitted that certain routes were assigned with incorrect start times, based on the inside values when compared with the station departure time. The employer has proposed changes to certain route start times; however, the Union has not agreed to any changes. The proposed routes will be identified to the Union within the next several days, and we would like to hear from you before revisiting this matter.

On that point, we requested that in the event that any start times are changed, the incumbents be permitted to revert back to their original start time at a later date upon request.

We will be actively be pressuring the Corporation to fix this flawed restructure and hold them accountable at every turn. If your route becomes over assessed as a result of any of these changes, the Corporation has agreed to remunerate the affected employees retroactively, to the date of implementation.

In solidarity,
Chris Zukowsky
