BCTF Strike: Picket Lines and the Right of Refusal
As a result of the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) strike, Canada Post has predictably re-issued its order book notice, “Crossing Picket Lines”. In that order book notice, Canada Post employees are instructed to cross BCTF picket lines under threat of suspension. While Canada Post’s preoccupation with a punitive labour relations approach continues to astound, we continue to retain our rights under the Collective Agreement and Canada Labour Code.

EMPLOYEES REQUIRING ACCOMMODATION MAY NOT BE DENIED 48 HOURS’ NOTICE OF A SHIFT CHANGE!
When Canada Post seeks to change shift hours and/or days of work for employees in Group 1 (postal clerks, despatchers & mail handlers) and Group 2 (Letter Carriers & Mail Service Couriers), it must first ”meaningfully” consult with representatives of the Union and provide no less than 48 hours’ advance notice to the affected employees.
Should Canada Post fail to provide the required notice, the Collective Agreement requires that it pay the affected employees at the rate of time and one-half for all hours worked on the first scheduled shift following the change:

33rd Annual Western Regional
Summer Institute for Union Women
University Of Victoria
Victoria, British Columbia
July 8, 2014 through to July 13, 2014
The Summer Institute for Union Women is an educational event that will be hosted by the British Columbia Federation of Labour. This year’s theme is “Together Women Win”. Registration will begin on the afternoon of July 8, 2014 after 3:00 pm at the Residence Office on the campus of the University of Victoria. This year’s program includes over 20 trainings and workshops, labor actions, and much much more, designed around inspiring future women leaders in labor.
Selected applicants will stay on the University of Victoria and attend workshops, core trainings and events. Any Sisters wishing to attend must have support from the local to pay half of the costs. If the Local has limited resources they can request additional funding.
As space is limited, the Pacific Region will be sending six delegates and there will be a selection process after the application deadline on May 16, 2014. The members who are selected will be notified by phone on or after May 23, 2014.
