Ottawa – Members of one of the smallest Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) locals, Iles-de-la-Madeleine, (Quebec) will join their sisters and brothers from the Sudbury and Niagara Falls locals in Ontario, and the Vancouver (British Columbia) local on the picket lines at 12:01 am ET on Saturday, October 27.
Workers from the Fundy (New Brunswick) local are back at work after 24-hour strike action.
“Postal workers in rural areas, like Iles-de-la-Madeleine, are bargaining for equality,” says Mike Palecek, CUPW National President. “The historic pay equity decision may have achieved equity, but more needs to be done for full equality. Our rural members need job security and guaranteed hours, and they need to be paid for all the hours they work. We will not accept a deal which continues to treat a group of people like second-class citizens.”
While both sides remain at the bargaining table, CUPW members are still without agreements for the Urban Postal Operations and Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers (RSMC) bargaining unit.
