Every August, in what seems like some sadistic tradition, Canada Post rolls out hundreds of thousands of IKEA catalogues across the country and places them squarely on the backs of Letter Carriers. This “wonderful business opportunity” provides CPC with a handsome sum, which trickles down to the workers at a rate of $0.07 per piece delivered. For the pleasure of breaking our backs, we get a whole $7 for every 100 we deliver!

But August has come and gone, so where are the catalogues?

October 16^th is Canada Post’s 32^nd anniversary as a Crown corporation. CUPW National will be marking this anniversary with an action in Ottawa. This action will emphasize that Canada Post cannot cut its way to a better future and that it has another option that has worked at postal administrations around the world. The Corporation could add banking and financial services to improve its financial picture and preserve public postal services and jobs.

To this end, CUPW will be employing a “Banking on a future for Canada Post” theme on October 16^th.

As part of this action we will be distributing buttons with the same message to all members in the Vancouver local.

We ask our members to please support this action by wearing these buttons on October 16^th, 2013.

Management needs to know that the members understand that the corporation has options other than cutting and that they support the union’s position on postal banking.

The Union Hall is receiving a lot of questions about the waiting period and top up credits when using the Short Term Disability Plan (STDP).

The STDP is the plan that replaced our sick leave in this Collective Agreement and although CUPW disagreed with it, this is the plan we now use when we are sick or suffer an injury at home.
