MSC Restructure – Where do we go from here?

MSC Restructure – Where do we go from here?

The MSC restructure and master bid is now completed and set to implement on October 19, 2008.

Our thanks go out to Tom Quan for his hard work as Union Observer and also to Reinholdt Dundas for his assistance during the restructure.

The end result was the creation of five full-time positions and a reduction of seven part-time positions. This result, while by no means exceptional, does represent a small overall gain – a welcome reversal to a negative trend in Group 2.

Management has informally told us that they intend to look at a complete restructure of the HVO schedules “some time in the new year”. Hints have also been made about “looking at changes to VPDC schedules”. There has been no proper notice or consultation on either.

It would seem that Canada Post is still trying to figure out its new and unimproved air network. The acquisition of two used DC-10 aircraft in September has resulted in significant delays to the mail, major changes to HVO schedules and an increase in graveyard work. Word has it that on day two of the inbound flight a tiny little compass on one of the aircraft failed and a spare part had to be flown up from Tennessee. Could this be a metaphor for Canada Post losing its direction? Those of us who deal with certain managers on a day-to-day basis have often questioned the moral compass of the corporation – perhaps this was a sign.

The strategic approach management decided to take initially was to wait until the very last minute and panic.
